Creating a cathedral-style living room is a wonderful opportunity to transform an attic space into a spectacular living area. In our Paix project, the challenge was to reveal an exceptional asset: a panoramic view of Paris, previously only visible from the top floor.
To take advantage of this potential, the agency designed a cathedral-style living room under the roof, completely restructured and opening onto a large terrace. This new space combines natural light, generous volumes, and a direct connection to the outdoors, offering a warm, bright living space with a view.
Optimizing an old attic: a key step in attic conversion
Transforming an old attic into a real living space requires careful technical consideration. One of the key points concerns the thickness of the insulation layer installed under the roof.
In this project, the existing ceiling height—both on the floor and in the attic—was generous enough to accommodate high-performance insulation while preserving the desired effect: a spectacular cathedral ceiling, a hallmark of attic conversions.
Creating a bright living room by optimizing openings
One of the major advantages of a cathedral ceiling is its ability to capture natural light. Here, each opening has been designed and positioned to maximize brightness:
- A skylight illuminates the staircase, naturally drawing the eye upwards to the upper floors.
- A large bay window floods the living room with light and diffuses it into the kitchen, which is extended by a glass roof, creating visual continuity between the spaces.
- All the openings have been optimized to ensure the smooth flow of light, a key element of comfort in an attic conversion.
A cathedral-like living room that magnifies the view of Paris
Thanks to this architectural transformation, the top floor has become the heart of the home. The living room under the eaves now opens onto a terrace that extends the living space outdoors and allows residents to fully enjoy the breathtaking view of Paris—day and night.
This type of layout adds significant value to a renovation: it reinvents the top floor, offers a new perspective on the house, and creates a unique atmosphere combining height, light, and landscape.
